SDGs: the successors of the Millennium Goals
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were launched in 2015 with the goal of ending extreme poverty, inequality, injustice, and climate change. The SDGs are the successors of the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) from 2000.
The Millennium Development Goals led to:
- half the amount of poverty in the world;
- the percentage of children receiving basic education increased to 90 percent;
- the number of children dying from preventable diseases decreased;
- an end to the spread of malaria and TB.
- 2.3 billion people gained access to clean drinking water since 2000.
However, since 2000, new problems have emerged that require a global approach. Consider the growing inequality, the rights of women and girls, peace and security, and climate change.
The 193 member states of the United Nations (UN) have now set the development agenda for 2015 – 2030. The agenda consists of 17 sustainable development goals with 169 underlying targets. All member states must ensure their translation into national policy. The SDGs apply to all countries and all people.
The busiest intersection in the Netherlands is illuminated with Sustainable Development Goals.
In November 2019, the busiest intersection in the Netherlands was illuminated to highlight the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During the Impact Days, we projected in collaboration with other organizations such as Light Up Collective, Epson Europe B.V., Municipality of Utrecht, Utrecht4GlobalGoals, SDG Netherlands, and TivoliVredenburg the Sustainable Development Goals on our building at Vredenburg 40.
The goal of the light show was to create more awareness about the goals of the Municipality of Utrecht, SDG House, social institutions, and local entrepreneurs striving daily to make a difference.
