Who is the workshop for?

This workshop is designed for front-end developers who prioritize web standards over frameworks and want to dive deep into form-associated custom elements. It’s focused on enhancing your understanding of web components, form controls, and associated web standards to develop more robust and standards-compliant components. Prior knowledge of basic frontend technologies, web components, and experience with forms and form controls is recommended. Please note, the workshop emphasizes technical integration with existing web standards rather than UI/UX design of custom form controls.

In this workshop, you will learn to:

  • Understand the significance of (vanilla) form controls and their role as universal building blocks in web projects.
  • Explore APIs like Shadow DOM and ElementInternals essential for developing form-associated custom elements.
  • Learn patterns and architectures for creating custom form controls, including nested forms in Shadow DOM.
  • Gain detailed insights into various web standards related to form controls, equipping you to navigate frontend development challenges effectively.

What you’ll need

This workshop will include many practical sessions for which you will need:

  • A foundation in HTML and CSS and JavaScript is recommended
  • A laptop with text editor, a modern browser, and git installed and operational
  • A free Github account (to be created prior to the workshop)
  • Ability to perform basic git operations such as cloning, committing, pushing, pulling, and branching is recommended
